Sewing Machine Basics

Cost: £49 |  Time: 9.30 – 12.30 (please arrive at 9.15)

This Sewing Machine Basics workshop will enable you to:

  • How to thread a sewing machine
  • How to change stitch length and why
  • Understanding which needle to use in your machine
  • How to change a needle
  • Use of different sewing machine feet
  • Basic stitching and going round curves and corners
  • Looking after your machine

9.15 – 9.30 Welcome drink and introduction to the studio, set up your machine, if you have brought one.

9.30 – 10.30 Working through the main parts of the sewing machine and learning about the functions of the different buttons and knobs!

How to thread the sewing machine, and working through some basic straight stitching, followed by tackling curves and corners. Experimenting with stitch length and width.

10.30- 11.00 Find out how to care for your sewing machine, and what you need to do to ensure it stays in good working order. We will also change a needle and look at the various types of sewing machine needles available and when to use them.

11.00 – 12.30 Make a simple zipped cushion cover using prepared fabric pieces. Learn about sewing machine feet which are used in soft furnishings. Change the foot on the machine to the zipper foot and under guidance stitch the zip into the cushion cover. Turn out the cover and stuff with a pad and admire the results of your new skills.
