This Roman blind making workshop will enable you to:

  • Make a Roman Blind to a professional standard
  • Calculate the position of rod pockets
  • Understand pattern placement of fabric for a Roman Blind
  • Calculate the fabric quantity required
  • Understand child safety issues and how to ensure a blind is compliant with regulations
  • Measure a window for a Roman Blind
  • Know how to fit a blind and the options available for mounting

9.15 – 9.30 Welcome drink and introduction to the studio.

9.30 – 12.30 Measuring a window for a Roman Blind, and how to use the measurements to calculate the fabric required. This will also involve working with pattern repeats.

How to prepare fabric, considering pattern placement and allowances for hems and turnings.

Work out the spacing of the folds, prepare the lining fabric and measure out and stitch the rod pockets.

Look at how calculations can be adapted to produce cascading folds and borders.

12.30 -1.00 Lunch break

1.00 – 4.00 Construction of the Roman Blind using mainly hand sewing techniques, including:

Slip stitch the lining to the face fabric, then stab stitch the rod pockets to hold the blind together. Create the heading and machine stitch in velcro, then hand sew to secure to the blind. No visible machine stitching can be seen on the face fabric.

Cut rods and bottom bar, and insert into the blind.

Consider hardware options and how to ensure they meet with child safety regulations. Mount blind onto a batten and string up.

Admire the completed Roman Blind.
