Two day Curtain Making course to learn all about curtain making – Cost £249

This will cover pencil pleat, machined curtains and hand sewn curtains with interlining and hand pleated headings.

In this curtain making workshop will cover:

  • Calculate fabric quantity for curtains
  • Measure a window for curtains
  • Make a pencil pleat, machined curtain
  • Know the correct hem for different lengths of curtain
  • Understand pattern placement when making curtains
  • Attach heading tape to curtains
  • Make a hand sewn curtain
  • Join widths of fabric
  • Create beautiful hand sewn pleats
  • Calculate the number and location of pleats in a curtain heading
  • Mitre the corner of a curtain

Two day course content…

9.15 – 9.30 Welcome drink and introduction to the studio.

9.30 – 12.30 We begin with how to measure a window for a curtain, with and without fittings present, and how much allowance to make outside of the recess.

Calculate the fabric required to make curtains, considering pattern repeats.

Make a pencil pleat, machined curtain, by preparing the lining and face fabric. This will involve hemming and slip stitching the hem in place.

Attach the lining to the face fabric and form mock mitres at the corners, adding lead weights. Addition of pencil pleat tape to create the machined heading of the curtain.

12.30 -1.00 Lunch break

1.00 – 4.00 Making a hand sewn curtain, to include slip stitching the lining into the main fabric and creating a mitred corner. Calculating the number and position of pleats and how you would do this when presented with a set track or pole length. Creating hand sewn pleats such as Goblet, French, Box, and Triple Pinch Pleats to produce a stunning hand sewn heading.

9.15 – 9.30 Discussion about day one and welcome drink

9.30 – 12.30 Starting with a roll of fabric we will work through the checks that you need to make before starting a project, including inspection of fabric, and marking out the drops.

Joining widths of fabric and cover methods to do this and how this works into our fabric quantity calculations.

Preparation to make an interlined curtain, involving finding out about the types of interlining products available. Secure the interlining and lining together, then slipstitch the lining fabric in place. Produce a chain stitch for linking the lining to the main fabric.

12.30 -1.00 Lunch break

1.00 – 4.00 Complete the interlined curtain and calculate the pleats so the curtain can be pleated to pattern.
